Paint by Radical for Children

It is becoming increasingly popular to enroll toddlers and small children in Chinese lessons. How do you motivate them to learn Chinese?

Being a father myself, I know the challenge of teaching a western kid Chinese. It is absolutely not an easy task.

If you are facing the same challenge, perhaps you have made your own experiences in this regard. Please let me know what you have found, you are welcome to share your thoughts in the comments section below.

In an attempt to produce some useful material, I have cooked up the following prototype. It is a "paint by radical" for children. I think most of us did the "paint by number" or "paint by letter" exercises in elementary school, so you'll probably feel very familiar with this concept.

Download the "paint by radical" prototype (FREE)

Feel free to click here and download the prototype for your own kids to use.

I very much hope it will be useful, both for my own son and for your kids. If it is well-received by the visitors of my website, then I will make sure to make some more of this.

The point of paint by radical

The idea is to help children understand how Chinese characters are compounds of different radicals. To many westerners the Chinese characters look much like a bunch of smacked spiders. How do kids view them? I imagine it would be pretty much the same - at least in the beginning.

In this Paint by Radical there are five different radicals to look out for.

Four of these five radicals will be very easy to find and paint, as they have the same position in all the characters. One of them will be harder though, as the radical may be positioned on top, in the bottom, to the left or in even inside the character.

Happy coloring!
